Biography

Dr. Jian Yang is born in 1974 in Jiangxi, China. He received his PhD at the Institute of Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICCAS, China) in 2002. After 3-year postdoctoral research in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL USA) with Prof. Guillermo Ameer, he joined the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in 2006 and then received an early promotion to the rank of tenured Associate Professor in 2011. Dr. Yang relocated to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) as a tenured Associate Professor in 2012. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2015 and then became the Lloyd & Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair in Regeneration Engineering in 2019. Dr. Yang joined Westlake University in July 2023 as a full-time Chair Professor in Biomaterials and Regenerative Engineering.

Research

Dr. Yang is known for his pioneering contribution to citrate chemistry and biology for the development and applications of citrate-based biomaterials and luminescent materials. Dr. Yang has published 150+ research articles and received 22 issued US patents and 100+ international patents/applications. The research topics in Dr. Yang’s lab include but not limited to: 1) Citrate chemistry and biology for biomaterials development; 2) complex tissue repair and regeneration; 3) cell metabolism and stem cell differentiation; 4) biomanufacturing; 5) bioimaging and biosensing; 6) functional biomaterials and medical devices; 7) artificial intelligence and machine learning.


Dr. Yang was a recipient of US NSF CAREER Award (2010), Outstanding Young Engineering Faculty Award at University of Texas at Arlington (2011) and PSEAS Outstanding Research Award at the Pennsylvania State University (2018). Dr. Yang is an elected Fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE, 2016), a Fellow of National Academy of Inventors (NAI, 2018), a Fellow of Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES, 2020), and a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2021).  Dr. Yang is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of “Bioactive Materials”, and an Associate Editor of “Science Advances”, and an Associate Editor of “Frontiers in Biotechnology and Bioengineering”. Dr. Yang is a co-founder and the Past-President of Chinese Association for Biomaterials (CAB) (2018-2022) and also the recipient of 2023 CAB Distinguished Leadership and Service Award. Dr. Yang co-invented biodegradable poly(octamethylene Citrate) (POC), the only synthetic biodegradable thermoset polyester that was ever authorized by the US FDA for the use in implantable medical devices.
