Biography

Jiaxing Huang received his B.S. degree in Chemical Physics from University of Science and technology (USTC) of China, Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and became a Miller Fellow at University of California, Berkeley in 2004. From 2007 to 2021, he was an assistant, associate and then full professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL USA). He joined Westlake University in August 2021 to become a chair professor of materials in the School of Engineering.

Prof. Huang enjoys integrating education and research to enhance learning experience for his students, trainees and himself. In research, they apply chemical principles and tools to discover new materials, advance materials processing and manufacturing, and use material innovations for better living. Through teaching, they aim to develop intuition, inspire creativity and bring the best out of students, trainees and themselves.

His work has been recognized by awards from the National Science Foundation (US), the Sloan Foundation (US), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the American Vacuum Society, and the International Aerosol Research Assembly. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship (US) in 2014, the JSPS Fellowship from Japan in 2016, the Humboldt Research Award from Germany in 2017, and the AAAFM-Stoddart Award in Functional Materials in 2023. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the founding Editor-in-Chief of Accounts of Materials Research, the first global partner journal of the American Chemical Society.

Research

We employ chemical principles and tools to advance materials processing and manufacturing. We also leverage our materials discoveries to learn, address and define problems in other areas of science and engineering or in the society, aiming for transformative and enduring impacts, and by doing so, promoting the intellectual growth of our trainees and ourselves. Below are some recent research interests:

Materials concepts for personal care and public health

Additive-free solution processing of carbon nanotubes

Chemistry and processing of graphene oxide based materials

Physical functions of information-bearing surfaces

Bulk nanostructured materials from well-defined building blocks

Spatial and temporal modulation of material structures and properties: From continuum to discontinuum
